Our speaker, Elizer Darris, will discuss efforts to “Disrupt, Dismantle, and Destroy” mass incarceration. Now a field organizer for ACLU of Minnesota, his views are informed by his own experience. After being sentenced to natural life in prison as a juvenile and violently struggling for years in adult facilities, Darris fought to turn his life around. By studying law and working with his state-appointed counsel he successfully fought to get his life sentence reversed on appeal. Darris became a business owner, consultant, educator, IT specialist, and motivational speaker. He will discuss the historical background of mass incarceration and ACLU’s Campaign for Smart Justice, which aims to reduce the U.S. jail and prison population by 50 percent.
